The .icns icon resource file is used by Apple Mac OS X, starting with version 10.3. It is used to store a set of small and large icons used for programs, documents, or other files. An icon resource file will generally consist of a series of images stored separately in thecorrect sizes – 16x16px up to 512x512px, in colour depths of 1-bit up to 32-bit. It also stores information about the locations of the different versions of the image within the overall file.
Usability and Content
An .icns file is made up of several components; including a Mask IDList attribute, an IconIDList attribute, and a series of image resources with header data and bits that define the dimensions and color depth. It may also include multiple sizes or representations of the same image as well as an alpha channel, which defines the level of transparency. With this level of versatility, a single .icns file can be used for both beautiful graphical artwork as well as containing basic OS X icons.
Compatibility
The .icns file format is supported by Mac OS X, but is not natively supported by any other operating systems. However, certain tools such as iConvert Icons on Windows can open and manipulate them; and they can be converted to other formats such as .ico, .png, .bmp, etc. with these tools. They are often distributed with applications on Mac OS X as these can be easily modified by users to customise their application.
