The .IBA (iBooks Author Document) file extension is used by the iBooks Author application. It is an e-book authoring program developed by Apple Inc. for creating interactive multimedia books for the iPad and MacOS devices. The IBA file extension contains book data, including graphics, audio, video, chapters, section titles and subtitles, as well as setting options for titles that will be published to the iphone or ipad through the AppStore. Additionally, the books can be exported as PDF documents or shared over the country's iBookstore.
File Structure
An IBA file consists of an XML-structured text file with the xhtml markup language written in UTF-8 encoding, along with library items (such as images, audio files or films) that are stored in a package structure. These library items could have .JPG, .PDF, .MOV, .MP3, .MP4, and .WAV extensions. This basically means that they contain both the content of the book that was created using iBooks Author as well as the assets associated with it.
Applications
The only application that can open an IBA file is the Apple iBooks Author app, which has only been released for MacOS operating systems. As it is not available for other platforms such as Windows or Linux, any user of these operating systems must use a third-party solution like calibre to convert their IBA file to another format such as EPUB or MOBI which is recognized by other eBook readers.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .IBA) with the new application.
