The HXS (Help 2 Compiled Help File) file extension is a .hxs file format, which is designated for helping developers create SmartHelp applications with content that can be accessed directly by end-users. The HXS files are compiled help files used in Microsoft HTML Help version 2 or later. The HXS file contains an exact description of the help data, such as topics, tables of contents, navigation points and index terms, done according to special syntax rules described by Microsoft.
For viewing and using compiled HXS help files, developers must have a compatible version of the Microsoft HTML Help Workshop installed on their computer. Without the required Help Workshop, a user cannot open and use HXS files properly. HXS also requires the installation of Microsoft HTML Help 2 or later in order for the viewer to run.
