The IAF file extension is used by Microsoft’s Outlook software. It stores configuration information about a POP3 mail account, including the server settings, account name, and authentication details. IAF files are used when users set up mail accounts in Outlook and allows for fast re-configuration if the settings have to be changed.
Role in Outlook
The IAF file extension is created when Outlook is used to configure a new mail account. For POP3 mail accounts configured in Outlook, two files are created with this extension stored in a folder called "Accounts" stored within the Application Data directory. One of these files contain the configuration details of that particular mail account while other contains all the signature texts for that particular mail account. Most settings necessary for creating an outlook mail account are automatically derived from user inputs like server name, email address and password. When users add or recreate accounts, Outlook first looks in its folders if it already has a similar settings saved before, and if found then creates new mail account with same settings as saved earlier.
