A .HLP (Windows Help File) is an archive file type used for containing manuals and guides. This file usually contains HTML content, images, interactive components, hot links and indexes that can all be used together in order to provide the user with a convenient search engine. This type of help file is used primarily by Microsoft Windows applications and is composed of segmented files collection and linked information. It was introduced in Windows 3.1.
HLP files are much easier to read and navigate than earlier help formats such as .GIDand .INF. These newer files contain a number of features that make them ideal for use in technical support situations: table of contents outliners, full text search capabilities, keyword hyperlinks, indexed topics, and help pop-up windows which allow users to access individual topics without having to open the entire file.
