The Extended Clip EDL file extension, also referred to as an Edit Decision List, is a type of data file primarily used by video production and editing software such as Avid Media Composer. These EDL files are typically used to store the details of which clips and source footage are used in the final cut of a production. Each EDL file is essentially a list of instructions telling the video editing software where to find specific clips, transitions and audio elements from the various media files used in the production.
File Specifications
An EDL file usually consists of a timecode-indexed list of specified edits, which contain information such as source media location, clip duration and transition parameters. This can be saved by video editing programs such as Adobe Premiere Pro, and still used today by many formats such as AVI, MP4, WMV, MOV, etc. EDLs can also be imported into programs like Final Cut Pro X. Similar file extensions include: DLX, CMX, XML, and GCF.
Benefits of EDLs
The primary advantage of using an EDL is the ability for projects to transfer from one editing software platform to another with little to no issue. While certain external data needs to be retained within the media itself (such as timecode), much of the source material and project information can be transported between systems without needing to restructure the project from scratch in a new environment. This ensures that projects can migrate easily between different programs, allowing for more flexible post production editing.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .EDL) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .EDL extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .EDL file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .EDL extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .EDL extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .EDL file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .EDL file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .EDL file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .EDL file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .EDL file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
