DBASE II Database Format | dataBased Intelligence | Database Files |
The DB2 file extension is used by dBASE II, a database application originally developed by Ashton-Tate and published in 1983. This database software was discontinued in 1989 when dBASE III and dBASE IV began to dominate the database market, but many people still use DB2 since there are data sets still available in this format. For most database applications, the DB2 file contains records of information organized into a series of (up to 255) fields that are organized as one or more related tables. These tables can be cross-referenced so that any changes or deletions will be reflected across all related tables. In addition, the DB2 file may also include table-related information such as field lengths and table view definitions.
File Extension Details
The DB2 file extension is also used in other software apps such as XBase for dBASE databases, QuestVIEW for dBASE data files and ConTEXT editor for database index files. Other related file extensions include .DBF, .DBT, .NDX, .CDX and .FPT.
Usage & Compatible Programs
Because of its popularity, the DB2 file type can be imported into many popular database applications including Microsoft Access, Visual FoxPro, Microsoft Excel and OpenOffice Calc. It is also possible to export and save records from a DB2 file into a variety of other formats, including delimited text files or 3rd party database programs. The small size of the DB2 file format and its ability to store a large amount of data relative to the size make it ideal for portability.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .DB2) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .DB2 extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .DB2 file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .DB2 extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .DB2 extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .DB2 file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .DB2 file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .DB2 file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .DB2 file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .DB2 file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
