Database Text Memo Format | dBASE | Database Files |
The .DBT file extension is short for Database Text File. It is an ASCII text data file created and used by various desktop database programs, including PC-File®, FoxPro, Paradox, and the dBase suite of applications. It stores single fields of data, one field on each line, and records are separated by a line containing the asterisk character (*). The file stores information in plain text that can be used by both humans and machines, allowing manual editing without the need for specialized software.
Structure and Uses:
The structure of each.DBT file depends on the database program used. FoxPro, for example, uses a simple collation (no delimiters between fields) whereas dBase uses comma-separated or tab-separated values. Some.DBT files store index information in addition to raw data, to more quickly find specific records from within the file. Often times, when applications has finished writing to the.DBT file it creates a corresponding index file with the same filename but with a .CDX or .NDX extension. These are indexes of the data stored in the original text file that enhances query performance.
Similar File Extensions:
Similar document types can use proprietary encoding methods and may be saved with other extension such as .DB, .FPT, .VAL, and .DAT. However, they will most likely have their own accompanying.CDX or.NDX index files.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .DBT) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .DBT extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .DBT file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .DBT extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .DBT extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .DBT file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .DBT file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .DBT file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .DBT file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .DBT file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
