Microsoft Office 2007 Chart Template Format | Microsoft | Data Files |
A CRTX (Office 2007 Chart Template File) is a type of generic file created by Microsoft Office 2007. CRTX files are used to store custom templates used as the foundation for charts in various programs in Office 2007, which includes Word 2007, PowerPoint 2007, and Excel 2007. These files save all the chart elements, such as title labels, fonts, background colors, type of chart, and axis labels. CRTX files are the replacement for the older CTT (Chart Template), XLTX (Excel Template), POTX (PowerPoint Template), and DOTX (Word Template) files used in previous versions of Microsoft Office.
These files can be identified by their .crtx extension, which indicates that it is a Microsoft Office Chart Template File. Other related formats include Excel Workbook ( .xlsx) and Excel Binary Workbook ( .xlsb). A user can open a CRTX file by using either the default Office 2007 suite, or using the latest versions of Office solutions such as Microsoft 365, Microsoft Office 2019, and Microsoft Office 2016.
Opening a CRTX File
A CRTX file can be opened by accessing the Microsoft Office Applications, and then navigating to the "Chart" tab. There, you will find the "Template" button which is found on the left side of the ribbon. This will open a dialogue box where any existing templates will be displayed. To open an external template file, select "Load a Template" from the top of the dialogue box. Then, browse your computer for the .crtx file that needs to be opened.
Saving Into a CRTX File
The CRTX file format cannot only be used for opening but also for saving new chart templates. After you create your own custom chart template from within any of the applications in the Microsoft Office suite, select "Save Chart" from under the "Design" tab. This will open up a prompt window where you can set a custom name and choose the output file type from a list of options, including the CRTX format.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .CRTX) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .CRTX extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .CRTX file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .CRTX extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .CRTX extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .CRTX file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .CRTX file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .CRTX file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .CRTX file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .CRTX file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
