The ASC file extension is used to represent ASCII text documents. Generally, an ASCII file refers to a file that contains plain text in the form of characters recognized by the American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII). Such files are typically opened using simple text editors such as Notepad, TextEdit or vim, though other programming-oriented editors may also be used.
In order to display document data, these files use the 7-bit American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) character set codes, which could be abbreviated within text programs. An ASC file is simply a document saved as an ASCII text file. It consists of a series of lines representing instructions, as well as any numerical or textual values associated with them. They can be customized to store almost any type of data, and many software application developers create applications that save data in the ASCII format.
ASC File Formatting & Characteristics
ASCII documents must adhere to a strict set of formatting rules to avoid issues when they are read by the application program. These include: lines being limited to 80 characters; special characters being included at specific locations to describe document formatting; and empty spaces and non-printing characters being used when needed. In addition, the ASC extension implies that all text is unformatted — meaning things like boldfaced characters, italics, or even formatting will not display properly in some text readers.
Related File Extensions
.TXT, .DOCX, .CSV, .CFG, and .BAT, are related to the .ASC file extension.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .ASC) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .ASC extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .ASC file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .ASC extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .ASC extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .ASC file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .ASC file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .ASC file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .ASC file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .ASC file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
