The ABK ( .abk) file type is a backup file extension used in some image editing software, notably CorelDRAW software. This file is an archive format containing backups of graphics files. The files are used to save time when recovering or restoring documents after system failure or a crash. Anyone familiar with image editing software will recognize the significance of this file type.
Creation and Use
ABK files are created through CorelDRAW and saved with the intention of being used as backup recovery files. These files are often stored with the original drawing as safety measure in case the document has to be restored from any untoward crash or changes made by the undo command. In addition, these files can be used in combination with disk mirroring software like RAID to create a copy of the drawing on another disk while it is being worked on.
Other similar file extensions are: .bk1, .bk2, .bk3, .VLX, and .ART.
Opening and Editing
These files cannot be opened directly in image editing software. The only way to get access to the content of a.abk file is by loading it in CorelDRAW using the software’s 'Restore' feature. This feature will load a version of the original drawing that was saved previously by the user at some point in time.
The content of an ABK file can only be edited indirectly by modifying the original document that created its backup. The user will not be able to edit the content within the ABK file itself; however, they can view all versions of their original document contained within it.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .ABK) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .ABK extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .ABK file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .ABK extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .ABK extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .ABK file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .ABK file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .ABK file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .ABK file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .ABK file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
