The .AAC file extension is a versatile audio compression format developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group. It is a part of the MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 standard and is used on Apple iOS devices, Sony PSP gaming consoles, and some multimedia websites.
The AAC format is designed to provide significantly better sound quality than MP3 with lower bit-rates. It also offers advanced features such as error correction codes and index tables for faster seeking during playback. Additional features include support for multi-channel input, metadata tagging of audio content, and a range of sampling rates for higher quality sound. Also, AAC files are smaller in size compared to other uncompressed audio formats and, therefore, takes up less disk space.
Capabilities
AAC files are capable of storing up to 48 channels of digital audio data and support both constant and variable bit-rate encoding. The advantage of variable bit-rate encoding is that the music can achieve higher sound quality while keeping the file size contained. AAC files are also backward compatible with MPEG-2 audio streams, allowing them to be easily played back through many different types of players and devices. They can be opened using various media players including Windows Media Player, iTunes, RealPlayer, and QuickTime.
Similar File Extensions
Similar file extensions include .MP4, .M4A, .M4B, .M4P, .M4V, MPEG-4, .AIF, .AIFC, .AIFF, .CAF, and .ALAC.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .AAC) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .AAC extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .AAC file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .AAC extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .AAC extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .AAC file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .AAC file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .AAC file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .AAC file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .AAC file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
