What is SLD file?
The SLD file extension is a Styled Layer Descriptor file used by various geographic information system (GIS) software platforms, such as ESRI, MapInfo and others. An SLD file contains visualization, styling data components and other descriptive information about the display and labeling of a GIS layer. The basic purpose of an SLD file is to define the feature classification scheme that organizes features into categories. [ ⏩ ] SLD file extension
What is ASC file?
The ASC file extension is used to represent ASCII text documents. Generally, an ASCII file refers to a file that contains plain text in the form of characters recognized by the American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII). Such files are typically opened using simple text editors such as Notepad, TextEdit or vim, though other programming-oriented editors may also be used. [ ⏩ ] ASC file extension

How to convert the file from SLD to ASC?
To successfully convert the SLD file to ASC, you should install one of the applications from the list. After installing the software, open the program and select the file you want to convert (file-name.SLD). The next step is to select the target format from the list, in this case ASC (usually converters allow you to convert to several different formats, so check out their features - maybe one of the available formats will suit you more than ASC).
What is a file conversion?
A data conversion is normally an automated process to some extent. The effect of the operation of one program is automatically the input product of another application. If that does not happen we need to help the process a little bit and convert the file on our own, e.g. SLD to ASC. To obtain a matched structure of the data, it is necessary to use an appropriate converter.
Program for converting SLD files to ASC files is a kind of a "binary code translator" compensating for the differences in the code or translating it in such a way so that another application could use it. For us, as users, the visible change will be only another file extension. (After converting the file, it will be the extension ASC, while before this step we had the SLD file). For the programs, the difference is on a much higher level – either the application will be able to open a new ASC file, or not.
