The SLD file extension is a Styled Layer Descriptor file used by various geographic information system (GIS) software platforms, such as ESRI, MapInfo and others. An SLD file contains visualization, styling data components and other descriptive information about the display and labeling of a GIS layer. The basic purpose of an SLD file is to define the feature classification scheme that organizes features into categories. It also contains attributes used for applying rendering properties to data, such as colors, lines, symbols, types of labels and other properties. An SLD file is usually shared between users as it stores all the visual information associated with a data layer.
SLD File Components
An SLD file contains components describing the integrity of the data layer, the range of classification values and their associated styling options. It may also contain documented information on how the styling was done in case the same style needs to be replicated. Generally, an SLD file includes different type of information related to styling: feature names, coverage scale range, external images for icons or URL addresses linked to image files located remotely, and specific info depending on what kind of layer it is styled. Additionally, it may use generalization techniques forgeographic features such as smoothing, eliminating jagged edges and grouping small objects.
Other File Extensions
Similar file extensions found alongside SLD files include XML, STYLE, SE, .RUL, .LYR, .LYT, and .QML files.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .SLD) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .SLD extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .SLD file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .SLD extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .SLD extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .SLD file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .SLD file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .SLD file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .SLD file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .SLD file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
