XSPF (XML Shareable Playlist Format) is an .xspf file type which is used to store music files and multimedia playlists. This file format was developed by the University of California in 2002 as a basic, easy-to-read format for sharing music playlists. The XSPF format was designed to be an open-source XML format for sharing multimedia playlists, and is now supported by leading media players such as VLC, iTunes and Windows Media Player.
What is XSPF Format?
The XSPF playlist format contains a list of song and video files that can be played in a media player. It stores the file name, location, title, and other information associated with each song or video listed in the playlist. The XSPF file also contains information about the order in which the content should be played back; this includes repeat settings and shuffle settings. This file format can be used to transfer music and video playlists from one device to another, or share them online with others.
Similar Formats
Other similar file formats include .pls, .m3u, and .wpl, which are all audio playlist file types. The .pls file type was developed by Winamp as a basic audio format for saving playlists on your computer, while the .m3u format was created for streaming recordings over the internet. The .wpl format was developed by Microsoft for their Windows Media Player software. All three of these formats can be opened and edited in most media player software applications.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .XSPF) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .XSPF extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .XSPF file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .XSPF extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .XSPF extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .XSPF file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .XSPF file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .XSPF file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .XSPF file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .XSPF file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
