The VDM file extension is associated with the DIANA-3, a software system used for analyzing, structuring and modifying software designs. It is short for “Vinculum Design Model”, which refers to data used to record the partitions that divide the system into subsystems, objects and components. The file contains data in the VDM Language Example format, which includes a set of features that can be used to generate VDM models. This language supports algebraic datatypes, non-deterministic computations, operations and multiple inheritance.
Technical Details
VDM files are basically text documents which use the Standard ML syntax, which is structured using context-free grammars. They are saved in a plain text format and are viewable using any simple text editing program such as Notepad. The text files come in either ASCII or UNICODE format, depending on the program used to create them. The programs that can open these files include VS Code, XML Notepad, and jEdit. They are related to other software programming specification file types like HLSL ( HLSL) and FX ( FX) files.
