The FX (Direct3D Effects File) is a file type used to store shader code to create effects and transform objects in computer graphics. It is derived from the DirectX .FX file format, which was developed by Microsoft and is part of a set of programming interfaces used to program effects for graphical applications. This type of file can be used to create real-time shading and lighting in 3D graphics. Using the .FX file extension, programmers are able to create various types of effects such as specular and diffuse lighting, displacement mapping, normal mapping, transparency, depth of field, motion blur, and texture blending.
The files using the .FX extension contain structured texts written in High Level Shading Language (HLSL) or Cg programming language. In recent years, the FX files have been used mainly in games and applications developed with Unity, Unreal Engine, and other similar programs. This type of file also is compatible with Adobe After Effects, Adobe Photoshop, LightWave 3D, and many other applications that support shader effects.
Similar File Formats
The FX file format is related to other shader language formats such as .VH, .VS, .PS, .CG, .CGFX, .FSH, .SH,and GLSL. All these formats are shader language files used in different types of programs.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .FX) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .FX extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .FX file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .FX extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .FX extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .FX file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .FX file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .FX file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .FX file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .FX file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
