Microsoft Windows Minidump Format | Microsoft | System Files |
MDMP files are Windows Minidump Files ( .MDMP) specified by Microsoft for debugging and troubleshooting purposes. These files are created by a very low-level process, which Windows automatically executes when any of its applications or services choke up with an error or hang, creating a dump file that contains the complete memory state of the crashed application.
MDMP files can be opened and analyzed using specialized debuggers offered by Microsoft for developers, such as WinDbg, Visual Studio Debugger and others. The data inside such files gives the programmer essential information about the source of the error, so they can fix the problem.
The MDMP file format is similar to other Windows memory dump formats, like .DMP, .HDMP, .KDMP, etc. All these belong to the larger family of files defined as Memory Dump Files, which are usually identified as System Files, since they contain critical memory data from different applications or processes.
Purpose of an MDM File
The main purpose of an MDMP file is to offer a way to debug a specific application or service that crashed on Windows machine, providing a snapshot of what was running in memory at the time of the crash. The contents of the MDMP file can be used to identify or identify which piece of code caused the application to crash, so necessary fixes or modifications can be performed.
Opening MDM Files with Debugging Tools
In order to analyze an MDMP file, it should be opened in a compatible software program. Microsoft offers several debugging tools such as WinDbg, Visual Studio debugger and others. Additional third-party tools, like JetBrain products for example, may also be useful for reading this particular type of file.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .MDMP) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .MDMP extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .MDMP file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .MDMP extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .MDMP extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .MDMP file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .MDMP file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .MDMP file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .MDMP file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .MDMP file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
