The TED file extension is associated primarily with the Alamo software, and more specifically, the Alamo Map File. Developed by SOF Environmental Inc., Alamo is a mapping and desktop geographic information system (GIS) platform. Alamo enables users to create data projects throughout the USA that are compatible with many File Geodatabase and Shapefile formats.
The TED file stores Tabular Environmental Data prepared in the Tabular ASCII Data (TAD) format in the ArcInfo Working Set or in a Grid Cover. It is generated when the user converts a tabular data set between eight available formats, making use of TAD's header and basic editing/viewing capabilities, including display and map making functions.
Format Specifications
The TED file stores headers in a *.hed file, which contains column labels, descriptions and statistics etc. for the tabular data. The main information is then stored in a *.tad file which contains the value of each variable for each row separated by spaces and/or commas. This allows for direct usage by programs other than Alamo. In addition, TED includes graphics files ( GRF, PNT, & PI1) as well as versions of other previously generated graphical output ( STD, FDO, & FDF) that can be made at anytime.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .TED) with the new application.
