A SXW (or .sxw) file is an XML-based document formatted by the word processor 3 StarOffice Writer, part of a suite of commercial productivity tools, released in 2000 by Sun Microsystems (now Oracle). Unlike the more common docx or.doc file formats which rely on complex binary encoding, an.sxw file simply wraps the text content and formatting instructions in XML tags. This makes its contents more readable by humans, as well as allowing for compatibility with many other applications.
Functionality
An SXW file can contain basic text formatting (such as bold, italics and font size), lists, tables, page formatting, headers and footers, image and graphic objects, and charts. Content from pasted sources such as webpages is retained in the SXW file as hyperlinks. Text objects are also retained when pasted from other documents. Compressed versions of font files can also be embedded in a SXW document to ensure readability across different operating systems and devices.
Compatibility
An SXW file can be opened and read by OpenOffice Writer, part of the free open source office suite Apache OpenOffice. It can be also opened with Microsoft Word 2007 or later if users also have Oracle's StarOffice 8 Filter Pack installed. Additional tools are available to open an.sxw file on a mobile device such as an iOS-based iPhone or iPad with Documents To Go. Other similar document format extensions are .fodt, .odt and .stw.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .SXW) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .SXW extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .SXW file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .SXW extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .SXW extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .SXW file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .SXW file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .SXW file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .SXW file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .SXW file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
