Summary Format | Garmin | Misc Files |
The SUM file extension is used by various Garmin applications to store control checksums for one or more files. A SUM file can be used to verify the original data of a certain file. If the checksum does not match, the data has been modified in some way. It is a type of binary file which contains the data necessary to confirm the integrity and accuracy of its parent files.
More About SUM Files
When read, the SUM file will produce a numerical “checksum” of its associated file, which can then be compared with other checksums to ensure nothing has been tampered with or altered. When generated by one of Garmin’s products, it is accompanied by an index file, usually with an .IND extension, that stores descriptive information about the corresponding .SUM file’s structure. This index file contains the sizes, names and other related attributes of the main file that it was created from. Other similar file extensions are .SFK, .CSV, and .SYS.
How SUM Files are Used
The purpose of the SUM file is to keep a record of all the changes done in its parent files such as GPS maps, updates and waypoints. For example, if you replace a GPS map with a newer version, the SUM file will identify any discrepancies that have occurred during the upgrade. This helps maintain accuracy and prevent corruption caused by unreliable or outdated software. The Garmin applications are designed to read and use both the.SUM and.IND files.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .SUM) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .SUM extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .SUM file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .SUM extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .SUM extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .SUM file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .SUM file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .SUM file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .SUM file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .SUM file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
