ScreamTracker Song Format | N/A | Audio Files |
The STS ( .STS) file is a song format used by the popular Scream Tracker tracker music program. Developed in the 1990's, the trackers are now obsolete having been superseded by more modern digital audio workstations such as Ableton Live and Pro Tools. However, the nostalgia of the original trackers has kept them alive today.
An STS file contains a single song composed in a tracker. This includes both the song data and instrument samples. Basically, it's a "package deal" meaning that all of its components combine together to form a single file. That said, an individual can still extract the different pieces from within an STS for separate use. For instance, a set of instrument samples can be exported from within the file without changing or affecting the remainder of the structure.
Technical Specifications
The STS file is setup on a row by row multiplex structure, not so unlike .MOD,
.XM, .MTM, or .STM files. It most commonly creates standard frequency rate samples with 8-bit sound and 4-bit effects samples generally including up to 32 channels. Additionally, samples can only reach up to about 255K in size while intruments max out at 2 MB. It also supports only a fixed amount of channels which means if one needs more than 32 voices, another format like .XM or .MTM may be necessary.
Compatibility
Originally, STS files were only compatible with Scream Tracker 3 (ST3). Having said that, due to its popularity various forks (open source versions) have since been developed, which offer support for Windows and DOS operating systems. In modern times, certain players like MODPlug Tracker have retrofitted their software to make these files playable.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .STS) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .STS extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .STS file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .STS extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .STS extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .STS file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .STS file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .STS file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .STS file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .STS file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
