The XM file format is used by Fasttracker 2 Extended Module, which was a software application created in the late 90's by Triton (Starbreeze Studios). It was produced for the purpose of providing high quality music composition with only limited hardware and software resources. This type of file format provided music creators with the ability to morph music quickly and efficiently in order to create effective pieces.
Features
The XM file format supported up to 128 instruments for the expansion of musical repertoire. It was given up to four channels and the ability to play up to 32 simultaneous notes at any given time. With a maximum sample size of 65535 samples, this allowed for plenty of space to be used for audio creation. It was also able to store up to 256 patterns, a maximum speed rate of 65535 ticks per pattern, and an advanced enveloping system including 8 Volume, Stereo, and Panning envelopes per instrument.
Similarity
Being a product developed from a prior generation of products, the XM format retains many similarities with its predecessor Fasttracker II's .mod. In addition to the .mod, other similar extended formats include .it, .s3m, and .xm. These formats were used until software advancements in the early 2000s allowed for more ease of use in production, prompting a switch away from these types of formats.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .XM) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .XM extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .XM file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .XM extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .XM extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .XM file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .XM file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .XM file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .XM file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .XM file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
