Standard MIDI File Format | N/A | Audio Files |
The SMF ( .SMF) file extension stands for "Standard MIDI File" and is associated with Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) and their digital formats of audio. It is a standard MIDI format used for exchanging data between hardware and software synthesizers, sequencers, and Pro Tools. The format is also known as "Standard MIDI Format."
SMF files are typically used to store and transport MIDI data across multiple different platforms. They are made up of multiple events or "timer-based events" that are combined into a timeline, which the sequencing software reads. This format allows for the synchronization of several MIDI tracks or filenames in time with one another, makes certain adjustments, and exports them all as a single file. Some DAWs allow users to import these synchronous tracks from other audio programs such as Garageband or Logic Pro to create larger projects faster. Most DAWs have this type of software built into them.
File Format
SMF files have two main file types: Type 0 and Type 1. Type 0 (also known as "single file") contain all synchronous track events within a single file, whereas Type 1 (or "multi-track") stores those events across multiple files within the same directory. Type 1 files are sometimes referred to as simply MIDI files, and they generally contain synchronous track events that may need to be adjusted after being imported as tracks into the DAW.
The structure of an SMF file mostly consists of text-based chunks that define the sequence of MIDI events; however, newer versions of these files can also include binary formatting with symbols, graphics, or textures that can be manipulated by applicable applications. Several other types of MIDI file formats also exist, such as .MIDI, .MID, .M3U, .RMI, and .KAR.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .SMF) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .SMF extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .SMF file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .SMF extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .SMF extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .SMF file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .SMF file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .SMF file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .SMF file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .SMF file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
