StuffIt Expander Archive Format | Smith Micro | Compressed Files |
The SIT .sit file extension is an archive format that was developed by Smith Micro Software. SIT is the default format for compressed files created by Stuffit, its commercial archive utility software. SIT files are generally smaller than ZIP archives. While ZIP allows for a maximum file of size 4 GB, the SIT format does not have a size limit. However, these can only be compressed in Unix. Other popular technologies used to create archives are RAR and 7z but they have a 4 GB limitation on single files.
What data types are supported?
The StuffIt archives support a wide range of data types including compressed images, documents, audio files, vector graphics, executable programs, videos and other supported multimedia components. These types of files can be stored and retrieved using their SIT file extension. The major advantage of this type of archive is that passwords can be applied before archiving or during the extraction process so that people cannot gain access to sensitive data.
Other Popular File Extensions
Stuffit is also compatible with other types of file extensions such as .zip, .rar, .tar.gz, .7z, etc. which makes it a reliable archiving tool for users who need to compress their data into multiple file types and share them without worrying about compatibility issues.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .SIT) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .SIT extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .SIT file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .SIT extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .SIT extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .SIT file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .SIT file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .SIT file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .SIT file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .SIT file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
