Microsoft Windows Shadow Spooler Format | Microsoft | System Files |
The SHD file extension is an acronym for the Windows Print Job Shadow file. It is a print spooler file type created by the Microsoft Windows operating system. The primary purpose of this file format is to store documents and graphics that have been queued in a printer queue, but which have yet to be printed or transferred to other output device. Additionally, this type of file is used to help troubleshoot any printing errors that may occur.
Purpose and Structure
A SHD file usually contains data that is associated with a Windows print job. This includes saved configuration settings related to the job such as the job attributes, printer settings, job status, and other distinguishing information related to the print job such as page count. As such, it helps Microsoft Windows store information related to a print job even when a user exits out of the application that initiated the job.
Similar file formats include .SHR, .SPL, .QUE, .LPT, and .GPD.
Using SHD files
Due to its function as a print spooler, you will usually encounter an SHD file when printing or working with output devices on Windows. In most cases, these files are only generated temporarily and are erased when a print job is successful. However, if an error occurs while trying to complete a print job, the SHD files will not be deleted from the system. In this case, you can access these files in order to help identify and troubleshoot the cause of the error.
In certain cases, Microsoft Notepad, or another text editor can open and view SHD files in order to inspect saved printer queues and see detailed information regarding print jobs. Generally speaking, however, they will likely appear as unreadable text strings since they contain binary data as well as text data.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .SHD) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .SHD extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .SHD file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .SHD extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .SHD extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .SHD file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .SHD file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .SHD file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .SHD file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .SHD file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
