The SHA1 ( SHA-1) file extension is a type of cryptographic hash function, utilized as a secure way to verify the authenticity of a file. The purpose of the file is to mathematically map the contents of the file to a fixed length “fingerprint”. It is used with Git, an open source distributed version control system, and S/MIME PKCS#7 digital signatures to verify the integrity and authenticity of files.
The SHA-1 algorithm takes data of arbitrary size and creates a 160 bits “digest” representing that data. Humans cannot easily see what is inside a SHA1 file. The only way to view the content of the file is through a hashing application like OpenSSL. Even tiny changes in the data will render completely different “hash values”.
Hash Values Update Frequency
The frequency for the update of hash values varies depending on application and context. For example, changes in source code should be documented with updates to the SHA-1 hash value for that data set. In distributed version control systems such as Git, often times, users must regenerate the hash values after each commit process.
Similar File Extensions
The SHA-1 file type has several similar counterparts, including MD5, RIJNDAEL, and SHA-256. All these functions serve to securely document digital data.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .SHA1) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .SHA1 extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .SHA1 file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .SHA1 extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .SHA1 extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .SHA1 file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .SHA1 file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .SHA1 file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .SHA1 file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .SHA1 file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
