The MD5 (MD5 Checksum File) file extension is used for a type of checksum file format developed by Professor Ronald Rivest in the early 1990s. The MD5 algorithm is designed to be used as a means of verifying the integrity of any file that has been downloaded, transferred or altered in any way before its intended use. It is widely used in web development, cyber security and software distribution to verify file content.
Purpose of MD5 Checksum Files
MD5 checksum files are essentially a signature or thumbprint of a given file. An exact digital replica of the original file is created, which can be used to compare against the original to see if it was changed in any way. If the files do not match, it is possible to identify what modifications were made by analyzing both files. As an extra layer of security, many users also encode an MD5 checksum file while sending or distributing a file so that it can be checked upon receipt.
Similar File Extensions
A few other checksum file extensions are similar to MD5, including SHA-1/SHA-256/SHA-512, CRC32 and SFV. These are used by different programs like VirusTotal from Google subsidiaries Chronicle, GNOME’s gvfs) and the online file verification service VirusTotal.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .MD5) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .MD5 extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .MD5 file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .MD5 extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .MD5 extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .MD5 file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .MD5 file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .MD5 file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .MD5 file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .MD5 file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
