The SFW ( .SFW) file extension is used to reference an image file type created by Seattle FilmWorks, the first digital imaging company which focused on consumer photography in 1995. An SFW file is based on the Kodak PhotoCD image specification and contains an image with a native resolution of up to 1024 x 1536. The actual encode/decode compression used by the FileWork's image processing system as well as the PhotoCD Profile 5 is unknown, however due to it's nature, this format can be considered lossless meaning without any quality losses of the original image upon resaving.
Compatibility
Although SFW format was developed specifically for photographers using Seattle FilmWorks products, many other imaging programs can also support this file type as well, including Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Paint, PaintShop Pro and Ulead PhotoImpact. Along with these programs, some multimedia players such as Apple QuickTime and Roxio album software can also open SFW files. Other related formats used by Seattle FilmWorks include .PFS, .SFX, SFX29, and .SPF.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .SFW) with the new application.
