GeneMapper Project Format | Applied Biosystems | Data Files |
The SER (GeneMapper Project File) file extension is an image format used for the storage and analysis of genetics data. It is mainly used by GeneMapper Software, which is a part of the set of software programs that enable researchers and scientists to explore genetic variations in both exon and non-exon regions within a sample. The GeneMapper Software, along with other applications, also aid in the extraction and display of gene sequences. The SER file format enables storage and analysis of these data resulting from a variety of genomics tools.
Technical Characteristics
The SER file is composed of a header, data and a trailer. The header section contains information on how the file was created, while the data section contains actual data values, such as sample or allele data from chip-based experiments. The trailer section indicates the end of data in the SER file. As different versions of GeneMapper Software (such as version 3.7) change from time to time, SER files differ slightly in size and content depending on the version used to create them. Although SER files are associated with GeneMapper Software, they may also be opened in some generic text editor such as Notepad. Other similar file extensions include.Out,.LQT,.ABI,.scf,.ab1 and.vec.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .SER) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .SER extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .SER file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .SER extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .SER extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .SER file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .SER file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .SER file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .SER file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .SER file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
