Microsoft Word Sealed Document Format | Oracle | Encoded Files |
The SDOC file extension is associated with the Securely Sealed Word Document File Format, which was developed proprietary to Microsoft Word and used for protecting sensitive data from digital alteration. This file format is included with the premium version of the software since 2007 and is used to secure documents before sharing them over the Internet.
The SDOC file is used to wrap a Microsoft Word (.doc or.docx) document in extra security so that only the intended recipient can open it. As such, the encrypted SDOC file acts like a form of “digital envelope” that envelops the original document. It is an XML-based system that encrypts the content of the wrapped file making it unreadable to anyone other than the user with appropriate permissions.
Encryption
The actual encryption method for Securely Sealed Word Document File Format is not disclosed publicly as part of Microsoft’s IP protection measures. It is assumed to belong to their Encrypted File System as it supports 2048-bit RSA encryption, symmetric encryption algorithms like AES-256 bit and additionally uses password-based authentication. The SDOC file contains both an original plaintext version of the document it envelopes along with its encrypted form.
Similar File Types
Other document security formats include .ppt, .pps, .xls, .xlsx, .pdf, .xml, and .html.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .SDOC) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .SDOC extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .SDOC file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .SDOC extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .SDOC extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .SDOC file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .SDOC file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .SDOC file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .SDOC file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .SDOC file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
