SCM SCM is the file format used by ScreenCam ScreenCam, a screen recording software developed by Oracle Corporation. ScreenCam records instructional or demonstration videos of what occurs on a computer's monitor, and saves it in the SCM file format. The recording can include narration or audio which is synced with the video, making it an ideal format for creating presentation and e-learning videos. SCM files contain video, audio, cursor data and user actions; all of which are compressed using a version of the zip algorithm to reduce their size.
Risks and Limitations
SCM files are particularly prone to becoming corrupted or damaged; leading to potential data loss. As only ScreenCam ScreenCam can open and edit these files, any corruption present will likely prevent the user from accessing the content. Furthermore, while SCM files use the same zip encoding as other file types such as .zip, they cannot be decompressed using any zip instruction that is not native to the ScreenCam application. Aside from this setback, SCM files are widely recognised, being supported by many web browsers and video players including QuickTime Player, VLC media player, and Windows Media Player, amongst others.
In addition to SCM files, there are a number of other file types used by screen recording applications including .str, .flv, .swf, .mov,and .lms.
