The RSRC file extension is associated with MacOS setup files and resources. These are included as integral parts of the application, and have a .RSRC file extension. The RSRC format illustrates the compilation format used by the MPW program ( Macintosh Programmer's Workshop) generator – an interactive and integrated development environment for software used on Apple Macintosh. The core of the RSRC format contains the resources which are used by applications in order to define the various attributes that it uses when launched.
RSRC File Format Details
The Macintosh RSRC file format is typically composed of a flat list of resources grouped together in type lists, followed by a map-length resource information used to point into the resource lists. Resource formats on the Mac OS platform can differ according to their type, but all of them follow the same basic structure. The header section contains a four-character resource type tag useful for identifying their type quickly; followed by a “resource ID” indicating how many of this type exist in the file. Then a list of attributes follows, each composed of two 32-bit values.
The RSRC file format is also related to other file extensions such as .RES, .TTF, .BNDL, and .DAT, used by various computing platforms. Since its initial development in 1984, the RSRC file extension has remained largely unchanged as it is still compatible with almost all versions of MacO.S except for versions older than System 7.
