The RES file extension stands for object code generated from a .RC resource file using the Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) compiler. RES files are typically linked with an executable (.EXE) file along with other object files compiled from C++ source codes to complete an application. These object code files contain information that control the layout of dialog boxes, menus and other items associated with Windows programs. RES help the Microsoft Windows operating system display elements like icons, fonts and animated graphics in the program.
Format Details
RES files are binary files that assimilate the text-based.RC resource files created by developers using a text editor. They contain strings, dialog box definitions, menu structures and version control data and define how Windows should look when an application is launched. RES files are provided with Windows applications or Visual Basic applications as resources for the prompt user interface (UI). Other similar file extensions are .RESX, RESOURCE, and RCDATA.
How to open RES Files?
RES files can be opened and edited with various text editors (e.g. Notepad++) or viewable with a hex editor(e.g.HxD Hex Editor). They can also be opened and edited by using various programming language IDEs such as Microsoft Visual Studio, Eclipse IDE, etc. Files of this type are meant to be opened by the software programs they are associated with, but, if needed they can still be opened using programs like Resource Hacker, which is a free opensource utility.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .RES) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .RES extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .RES file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .RES extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .RES extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .RES file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .RES file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .RES file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .RES file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .RES file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
