Microsoft Visual Studio Report Definition Format | Microsoft | Developer Files |
RDLC ( .rdlc) is a Visual Studio Client Report Definition File used by Microsoft Visual Studio to store complex reports to be used by Microsoft.NET Framework applications. This type of file can have multiple data fields in tabular or matrix formats and can include complex expressions, fonts, colors, and graphs for graphical output.
RDLC files use a custom Markup Language as description language and typically include references to variables or objects that have been previously defined in order to create a dynamic report. RDLC files are mostly used when working with ASP.NET, WPF, and WinForms technologies, although they can also be used in web services, web applications, and SharePoint Solutions.
File Variations
RDLC files are similar to other report-definition file formats, such as .rpt, .jrxml, and rdf. They are usually generated when compiling a project or when building a report from an integrated development environment (IDE). Additionally, they can be edited by double-clicking the file from the solution explorer.
Data Sources
For creating an RDLC file it is necessary to define both the data and layout components of the report. The data source is usually referred to as the DataSet and is composed of several fields such as strings, numerics, dates, images, lines, rectangles, etc. By connecting the DataSet with an RDLC file, it is possible to generate dynamic reports with the help of an integrated report designer.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .RDLC) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .RDLC extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .RDLC file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .RDLC extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .RDLC extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .RDLC file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .RDLC file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .RDLC file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .RDLC file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .RDLC file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
