The RAF ( .RAF) file extension is an image format created by FUJIFILM. The acronym RAF stands for "FUJIFILM Raw Image File," and is designed by FUJIFILM to be used exclusively with their digital camera line. RAW files are considered semi-professional or professional formats because they offer higher quality and more advanced editing capabilities than other file extensions, such as JPEGs.
RAF images contain the information exactly as it was captured by the camera's digital sensor before any processing. This makes them an ideal choice for any image manipulation, including editing, cropping, and printing. The RAF image format is not suitable for web display, and it should be converted to a device dependent format, such as PNG or JPEG, before displaying on the web. Also, the user will have to use specific imaging software to open and view the RAF images; popular options include FUJIFILM ZoomBrowser EX and Adobe Lightroom.
File Compression
RAF files are typically quite large due to the unpacked raw data contained in them; however, lossless compression can be applied to reduce their size while preserving image quality. FUJIFILM proprietary "EXR" compression system is one such option. If memory capacity is a limitation, files can also be converted to smaller, more compact file formats like JPEG or PNG.
Similar File Extensions
The RAF file format can present more information than other file extensions, making it a great choice when editing your images is a priority. Other similar file extensions used in photography include .CR2, .NEF, .ARW, and .SRW. All of these formats are based upon RAW data generated from digital camera sensors.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .RAF) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .RAF extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .RAF file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .RAF extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .RAF extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .RAF file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .RAF file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .RAF file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .RAF file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .RAF file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
