3D Studio Max Process Format | Autodesk, Inc. | Settings Files |
The PXP is a native file format in 3D Studio Max, a 3D modeling, animation, and rendering suite developed by Autodesk. Also known as the 3ds Max Process File, this data file contains information about the project that a 3D artist is working on, such as render settings, scene elements, effects, and animation. This type of file may include simple primitives (cube, sphere, and cylinder shapes), modifiers (subdivision surfaces and extrude shapes), complex lighting arrays (standard, ambient occlusion, photometric), and textures.
The PXP file allows users to save settings in their projects for use in later projects, as well as to share their work with other users on the same or different machines. It can be opened only with its proprietary software and there are no other software that can open this type of file. While it is native only to 3D Studio Max, there are other more generic file format used for 3D model storage such as STL, OBJ, and FBX.
File Properties and Structure
The PXP file may be saved as a binary file or as an ASCII text file. These files use variable length data records and contain information written in text fields. The data stored includes scene information including lights, selection sets, materials, shapes, transformations, cameras, viewports, and modifiers. This type of file also stores render information such as channels in composite maps, layers address for materials and render elements.
Compatibility (Read/Write)
3D Studio Max is the only software that can open and edit these files natively. However, some software programs like the Autodesk FBX Converter or Adobe After Effects may recognize some of the data contained in the PXP format but can only read it and not write it.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .PXP) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .PXP extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .PXP file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .PXP extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .PXP extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .PXP file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .PXP file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .PXP file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .PXP file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .PXP file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
