The PK3 (Quake 3 Engine Game Data File) file extension is an archive format used by the id Tech 3 game engine, the core of games like Quake III Arena, Return to Castle Wolfenstein and others. The purpose of the PK3 files is to packaging all the game data, including textures, sounds, maps, level geometry and game code, into one single file, making it easier to download and install a game or game mods. The structure of a PK3 file is similar to a zip or rar file; however the compression is not an essential part of its functionality.
Technical Details
A PK3 file is compiled using either the executable PK3EXE, Also known as id Extractor, or else a console program for developers called EXTRACT_PK3, as a result of a combination of multiple compiled MDL, MD2, and MD3, multitiered-map BSP, SHADER, and WAV, and text files such as CFG,.LOCALIZED elements. Some other game files with similar uses include P12, PAK, and WAD.
Using the PK3 File
To view the content of a PK3 file you can use any file extraction utilities such as WinZIP, WinRAR or 7Zip. If the PK3 file contains game modding data then the files in the PK3 needs to be copied over an existing game’s directory to take effect. In order to remove or add content without breaking the existing game, you can modify manually the contents outside of the engine or use switching between PK3 files via an installer.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .PK3) with the new application.
