The PES file extension is used by the Brother Embroidery Machine to save machine-readable embroidery designs. It is a proprietary binary format which has replaced the .PHB, .PED, and .PHC formats which are no longer supported by Brother.
Data Storage Format
Since the early 2000s, the PES format has been the default way of storing embroidery designs for a Brother machine. Most of the modern embroidery machines are nowadays able to read this kind of file. A.pes file consists of a header section, which stores information about the design such as colors, stitch types and stitch counts, and also the stitch data that form part of the design. The stitch data holds instructions along with coordinates and is relative to a point on the fabric in which it forms a part of. A variety of other file formats such as .DST, .PCM, and .JEF may also be used by other machines.
Using a PES File
To use a file saved in this format with a Brother machine requires a program that can import it and then send it to your machine. The design can either be manually imported or can be sent directly from the media card, USB drive or other storage device using specific software. For creating and editing designs all you need is a compatible software like Embird Studio, which is available on multiple platforms like Windows, macOS and Linux.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .PES) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .PES extension.

Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .PES file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it.
