The PDE file extension is a source code file used by the Processing Development Environment ( PDE). This open source programming language was developed by Ben Fry and Casey Reas based on tutorials from MIT, intended to provide an easy to learn and use environment for designers, artists, and hobbyists who want to experience coding without having to learn a complex programming language like Java or C++.
Code System & Software Environments
The PDE files can be created, edited, and compiled using Processing's integrated development environment (IDE), which is connected to a real-time code system that can read and interpret only the necessary parts of the code. Additionally, one can also natively support other graphic and audio libraries, making it easy for the user to work with multiple software environments. Furthermore, users are able to customize and tailor the source code used in their projects by using macros and factors present in the PDE development environment.
Similar File Types
Other popular coding language source file types include cpsc, .cpp, .java, .py, and .class. Depending on the platform used, source files can also have conventionally different file extensions, like in the case of JavaScript's .js, which represents a file in the same class as cpsc, or Ruby's .rb, whose source code includes elements from both Python and JavaScript.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .PDE) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .PDE extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .PDE file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .PDE extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .PDE extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .PDE file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .PDE file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .PDE file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .PDE file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .PDE file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
