The OVF file extension is associated with Open Virtualization Format (OVF). OVF is a platform-independent, efficient, secure and extensible format for packaging and distributing virtual appliances across different virtualization software solutions. OVF specification (version 2.0) is an industry standard and is developed by members of the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) organization.
Technical Details
An OVF package consists of one or more files that are compressed into a single object, known as an Open Virtualization Appliance (OVA). The OVF standard defines a file format (XML-based) used to describe the properties of virtual machines, such as name, product version and operating system; the components which compose them, like disks; and any mandatory or optional dependencies between these components. The file also includes a royalty-free license agreement that allows the distribution of the appliance in a network of virtual machines.
OVF allows users to move virtual appliances from one system to another while maintaining the same desired states and levels of security. A user may refer to commonly used formats for their OVF packages, such as VMDK and VHD for disk images, as well as other media and device formats. It is supported by virtualization platforms such as VMware, Citrix, ESXi, Hyper-V, and others. Other common file extensions related to OVF are .ovf, .ova, .vmc, .vhdx, .vmdk, .vmx.
