The OPF file extension is part of the Open Packaging Format created by Microsoft. An OPF file contains a package of files in XML format, which makes it easy for content creators to share content across multiple systems. It holds information about the documents and other issues that enables applications to pinpoint the location of the assets and the related data. Some of the data contained in an OPF file includes title, author's name, language, publisher, copyright trademarks, and other related info.
Components of an OPF File
An OPF file is composed of two main components: A manifest file and a meta-data file. The manifest file stores a list of all the files included in the package with their location, type, and other metadata. It can also contain other types of documents or website files. The meta-data file contains information of corporate logos, author’s name, publication date, publisher name, issue number, article title and other data regarding publication rights and licenses. Other content included in an OPF file can be images, text documents, audio files or video files.
File Management
When a user wants to download content from a server they send a request for the OPF file. The server sends back an OPF package containing a manifest and meta-data file. Through these two components it is relatively simple and straightforward for web users to get the content from multiple sources simultaneously. Open Packaging Format may also be used when editing documents offline since all resources are saved within the same package. Similar file extensions include EPUB, OXPS, ODT, ODP, ODB, ODF, and ODG.
Compatibility with Applications
Due to its great ability to store files in one package, many developers have incorporated OPF into their applications including AJAX-based libraries such as Apache ODF Toolkit and Open Office Software Development Kit ( SODK) as well as Atom protocols developed by Google. Additionally there are many plugins available that support the import of Open Package Format files including Adobe Digital Editions from Adobe CopyRight Server. In general, most modern programs are able to open OPF files.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .OPF) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .OPF extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .OPF file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .OPF extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .OPF extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .OPF file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .OPF file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .OPF file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .OPF file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .OPF file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
