The .NFS file extension is associated with the Network File System (NFS), a distributed file system protocol developed for Unix operating systems and now co-opted by several other operating systems. It enables remote hosts to mount local devices over a network and access files residing on them, as if they were connected locally. The NFS Temporary File is created when a file is opened, allowing temporary storage of data used by programs running on NFS-shared drives. When the program is finished with the temporary file, it is automatically deleted.
Usage Scenarios
NFS temporary files are most frequently used when an application such as a Microsoft Word document, spreadsheet, or graphic image is opened up remotely over a network. In order to access the file contents, the application creates an NFS Temporary File and uses it as a buffer where it can store the portions of the opened file that are to be accessed. Once the application is finished accessing the stored data from the NFS Temporary File, then the file is no longer required and becomes deleted. This behavior makes it possible for users to take advantage of a wide variety of features while accessing files remotely, such as working on presentations from home or streaming music from a laptop over an entertainment system.
