The NFO file extension is a type of Warez Information File, or WIF, created by various software applications to share information about software they are distributing. It is commonly used in the warez scene, an area of the Internet that trades copyrighted software, and NFO files are typically used in tandem with ZIP, RAR, ARJ, 7Z, and other compressed file types to distribute the shared software. The NFO format contains rich text information about the shared software, including its name, version number, size, publisher, and references to other related software.
Format Specification
A NFO file stores information in plain text using IBM PC/DOS-style line endings; however, some older applications use non-standard ASCII encoding methods instead. NFO files can be opened with any text editor or viewer program, such as Windows Notepad or Vim. Files can also be opened and displayed in a variety of specialized viewers that preserve styling and formatting instructions present in the original document. These viewers use Advanced Text Renderer (ATR) technology to automatically render text with anti-aliasing for better readability and support for various fonts and sizes.
Similar Formats
NFO files are closely related to other similar formats like the DIZ, PFW, and ASC file extensions. All of these formats are designed to store textual information about shared software that cannot be easily included in other types of archive file formats.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .NFO) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .NFO extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .NFO file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .NFO extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .NFO extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .NFO file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .NFO file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .NFO file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .NFO file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .NFO file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
