The .MPD file extension belongs to the Microsoft Project Database developed by Microsoft Corporation. MPD files are database files that contain properties, tasks, and resources and are created by the Microsoft Project management software. MPD files can store project information, including start and end dates, calendars, resources assigned to tasks, dependencies, variable information, status reports, earned value analysis and more. They normally store individual project plans which can be used when planning a new project or tracking the progress of an existing one.
Basic Structure
An MPD file consists of several database tables that store information about the current account settings like: locale settings, project schedules, resource exchange settings. In addition to these tables, data relating to project summary information (name of project, current budgeted hours), resource information (resource type, resource name) and task lists (date and duration of each task) is also saved in the MPD file. It stores task lists within a project’s plan, with entries for more details like planned start and finish dates. MPD file also contains standard documents for a particular situation like proposed Gantt and network charts.
Compatibility with other File Types
The MPD file format is specific to the Microsoft Project application. It is not compatible with other version of Project though .MPD files can be converted into other formats such as .XLS, .XLSX, .PDF, .TXT, etc. using Project Professional, its desktop version. Projects in MS Project are usually saved in a single go rather than sequentially creating them as this offers the best protection to avoid loss of data.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .MPD) with the new application.
