The MIM file extension is a type of Multi-Purpose Internet Mail extendable Message format which stores information pertaining to a particular email message. It contains attachments, email headers and other specifics including message content, sender, recipient, and other information which is saved in the email’s header fields. The files use the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) formatting, and can be created in different operating systems and various email clients, such as Outlook, Windows Live Mail, Mozilla Thunderbird, or Apple Mail.
Technical Details
When a user sends an email, the client software generates a MIM file with all the necessary information including the names of any attachments, the body text or message, and header details such as sender, recipient, time/date of creation. Generally the MIM files are stored in the temporary message folder of the user's computer. Other related file extensions include: .MSG, .EML, and .PST
.Usability
The MIM files are useful as they allow users to save emails as individual messages which can then be opened and printed from other programs or locations. For example, one could create backups of all their emails by saving each MIM file onto an external drive, or enabling auto-archiving functions within their email client's settings menu.
