File extension .MDW
|Microsoft Access Workgroup Information Format||N/A||Misc Files|
The MDW file extension is associated with Microsoft Access. Access is a powerful database application from Microsoft and part of the Office Suite. An Access MDW file is known as an Access workgroup file, and is used to give users, in multiple locations, access to the same set of permissions. When a user who has permission logs on to the database, the Microsoft Jet Database Engine (or more recently, the SQL Server Express) checks the MDW file for the users permissions. It uses this information to determine which objects can be viewed or modified depending on the user’s permissions.
Similar File Types
Other Microsoft related access files may have similar extensions such as MDE, MDB, ADP, ADE, or ADX. An Access MDE file stores a database application in an executable version that cannot be edited while an Access MDB file stores a database in a larger file that can be edited using Access. An Access ADP file stores a special type of database designed to quickly generate results from Structured Query Language (SQL) queries while an Access ADE file used to store data for an Access project. A Microsoft Access Add-in is stored in an ADX format.
MDW files are encrypted using Windows Encrypted File System (EFS). Each user stored in an MDW file has both individual and group settings controlling secure access such as read and write permissions. This encryption system works off of the Windows operating systems security protocols. Validated user names are necessary for access passwords; establishing a secure connection between the physical computer logging in and the MDW server.
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .MDW) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .MDW extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .MDW file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .MDW extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .MDW extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .MDW file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .MDW file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .MDW file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .MDW file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .MDW file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
