The .MAI file extension is associated with the Microsoft Mail, an email application developed by Microsoft to be used within businesses and corporations. It was also usable with the Exchange Server and Outlook, allowing users to access their digital mailboxes via any compatible software. It is a proprietary format that is supported by the Windows operating system as well as Windows 365.
The .MAI files are used for archiving emails, messages, or folders. This allows them to be saved in a secure location and kept from being lost through accidental deletion. The messages can then be restored into a specified mailbox at any time. Email attachments can also be saved in this type of file format.

Opening MAI Files
MAI files can only be opened by Microsoft Mail for Exchange 4.0, Microsoft Outlook 97, 98 and 2000 as well as Windows 365. Note that new versions of Outlook no longer support the.mai extension inside of its program instead opting for an alternative file format ( .MSG)
