The KMP (Korg Trinity/Triton Keymap File) file extension is a type of data file used by Korg Krome, Korg Triton and Korg Trinity Digital Music Workstations. These files are used to store the MIDI-to-keyboard mapping information that determines which sounds play when a key on the keyboard is pressed, and how much data is passed for each sound.
KMP files consist of data formatted in text containing .FF#, FZ#M and ZAL commands. FF# is used to map a MIDI note number to any Triton voice number or exclusive Trinity wave sequence. FZ#M is a combination of the ‘FZ’ command and the ‘M’ command and it defines the MIDI note number, dynamic range, velocity range control, portamento time parameter and mono/poly after-touch combination. ZAL, on the other hand, is used to define complex rules for transforming MIDI data as it enters or leaves the instrument.
Creating and Using KMP Files
KMP files are usually created with specialized music workstation software. To create these files, you need to open a template file (.fst), then type long strings of commands directly into the file, or use media devices such as keyboards to enter commands. The KMP MIDI file format also supports multiple device types, so one file can be used for various devices.
Once a KMP file is created, it can be exported as midi files (.mid), Audio Interchange rage files (.aif) or binary file for controlling devices. Typically, KMP files are used to control sounds in computer music applications, digital music sequencers and hardware synthesizers. Other similar formats include .DMX, GKB, and MINI.
