The GITIGNORE file extension is associated with the version control system Git. The GITIGNORE file is used to specify which files and directories should not be tracked or considered by the system. It is often placed in the repository’s root directory and/or any other subdirectories.
Typically, the GITIGNORE file contains a list of file names and/or paths (wildcards are permitted), or patterns that match file names and make them "invisible" to the version control system.
